The Portuguese Rotary Foundation Concurso de Canto Lírico received, for the 11th edition, 41 applications from young lyric singers, from all over the country, one of the largest registrations in the history of the contest editions. Of the 41 young lyrical singers, 17 are from the North and Center region, 19 from the Lisbon and South region, and 5 from the Azores.
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ccording to the organization, the result of these candidacies is due to “the pandemic situation that dealt a severe blow in the context of artistic stage activities. We believe that the singers are eager for opportunities to perform”.
Until the 2nd of November, the members of the Competition jury will deliberate according to the applications sent by the singers and will select up to 30 participants, 24 for the Cascais and Porto tests and 6 for the tests in the Azores, to proceed to the 2nd stage, the eliminatory events, which will take place from November 20 in Angra do Heroísmo, Porto and Cascais.
Since 2007, the Portuguese Rotary Foundation’s Concurso de Canto Lírico has been asserting itself as a major initiative in the dissemination of lyrical singing at national level.
The initiative, promoted by the Portuguese Rotary Foundation, aims to promote the artistic improvement of young lyric singers, with advanced studies and at the beginning of their careers, supporting the continuation of their studies through the awarding of scholarships.
This support is offered by the Portuguese Rotary Foundation and other entities associated with the competition, as is the case of the Lisbon City Council, and is essential for the realization of the artistic aspirations of young lyric singers.
The Concurso de Canto Lírico has already awarded a wide range of singers who currently score on national and international stages, such as sopranos Susana Gaspar and Sónia Grané, half-soprano Cátia Moreso or baritones André Baleiro and Hugo Oliveira, among other laureates.
