15th edition of Misty Fest starts with premieres in the first week of the festival
November 1 to December 1, 2024
Misty Fest 2024 is approaching with a new investment in musical and geographic diversity. This year, we return to cross the geographies of the musical map and find a ‘safe harbour’ in the main performance venues in Porto, Lisbon, Braga, Espinho, and Loulé.
With programming without borders, the autumn festival bets on difference again and brings to the stages from north to south notable names from national and international music in various genres and styles – from morna to jazz, classical music to electronic, from the acoustics of pianos to the delicacy of synthesizers, from fado and Portuguese guitar to electronic pop and flamenco.
This year, and as expected, Misty continues to thrive on reunions – such as the return of Karl Seglem to the festival after his presence in 2021 – but also on many premieres and prominent names who make a point of showcasing a new repertoire for the first time live, like Seglem himself, Sven Helbig, Brandee Younger, Rocío Marquéz & Bronquio, Two Lanes, GoGo Penguin, Daudi Matsiko, Nils Hoffmann, and Tony Ann, who visits our country for the first time, with both concerts already sold out, after a long world tour with dozens of fully booked shows.
And speaking of premieres, we must start… from the beginning
Misty Fest kicks off this Friday, November 1, at Casa da Música in Porto, with the live premiere of songs from the new album by the duo Maria João & André Mehmari, titled Algodão (released at the beginning of September). Music is and will always be the best bridge to lessen distances and promote creative partnerships; this work proves that. Live, the voice and inventive spirit of Maria João join the mastery of the piano and electronics of Brazilian composer André Mehmari. Besides Porto, Lisbon will also hear and see firsthand the delicacy of the words and sound textures of Algodão – at Teatro São Luiz, in Lisbon, on November 8.

After a long tour through the country and Poland, Nancy Vieira finally has a meeting scheduled with the northern audience on November 2, at Casa da Música. This will be her first major concert under her own name in Porto. A unique moment of celebration and sharing is expected. “Gente” will be the theme for a meeting with morna, samba, and fado crioulo in a crossroad of people and words from our so diverse and encompassing diaspora. On the 15th, one of the great ambassadors of Cabo Verdean culture and music will perform at B.Leza in Lisbon.

And if this first week of Misty Fest is marked by premieres, it may also be a week of discoveries in various musical genres. This year, electronics takes on one of the prominent roles in the festival, with the presence of young references of European electronics represented by Two Lanes or Nils Hoffmann. But there is another name that stands out – Christian Löffler. On November 8, Capitólio will host the melodic electronic music of this German producer and DJ, in a proposal for a sound journey of the new, “A Life.” The next day, he performs at Casa da Música in Porto. The first part will be ensured by the melodic house tinted with indie-folk nuances of Natascha Polké – another name to remember in the new global electronics.

We continue forward in this first week of Misty filled with names to note. Tony Ann, a young piano prodigy and Canadian composer, promises to showcase his deep talent for creating dense, rich, and emotional compositions in three exclusive concerts – on November 9, at São Luiz Teatro Municipal in Lisbon and, the following day, on the 10th, at Casa da Música in Porto (sessions at 4 PM and 9 PM). To hear live for the absolute premiere the trilogy of colors and sounds of “EMOTIONALLY (BLUE, ORANGE, RED)” and the classics that helped consolidate the career of the nonconformist and idea-filled pianist. With all three concerts already sold out, Tony Ann will return to Portugal in 2025 (June 13 and 14, respectively in Lisbon and Porto) to satisfy the demand of the audience in Portugal.

Before we catch our breath for the upcoming promising second week, on November 10, São Luiz will host one of the great names of contemporary flamenco, Rocío Márquez, who is the voice of the new generation of alternative, transgressive, and erudite flamenco. To Portugal, the singer brings for the first time the songs from her latest original album, “Tercer Cielo” (a live premiere) and will be accompanied by urban and electronic music producer Santi Bronquio. This concert is part of the Mostra Espanha 2024. Before this, the duo will take the stage at Cineteatro Louletano on November 8.

We close the suggestions for the first week of Misty Fest with a frequent presence on national stages – Sven Helbig. The German musician is one of the leading composers of the modern classical scene and subtle, experimental electronics, combined with a relaxed and post-modern sensibility. He will perform solo on November 10, at São Luiz, at a time when the artist has been showcasing his latest work, “Skills.” On November 12, he will visit Casa da Música.

The 15th edition of Misty Fest is just about to begin. There are still undeniable names from Portuguese music to mark on the agenda like the performances of Lina_, who will bring the multi-award-winning “Fado Camões” to Lisbon (November 27) and Porto (November 30); the long-awaited return to the stages of Lisbon (November 29) and Porto (December 1) of Manuel Fúria after the release of the danceable and personal “Os Perdedores”; Luiz Caracol (November 28 in Lisbon and November 29 in Porto) who will present the multiculturality of the show “Sou”; “Timbre,” the fourth studio album by Salvador Sobral, will also be one of the highlighted works in the three Misty concerts in Porto (November 26), Lisbon (November 27), and Braga (November 29).
