In 2019, fifty years have been celebrated since the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Art Library opened the doors to the public. Calouste Gulbenkian was known as “Lord 5%”, who sought only the best, but this conference seeks to overcome the mere biographical episodes of the collector and to consider it in the context of a wider context with communications that reflect innovatively on how the collectors operated, their knowledge networks, and the relationship they had with their collections, with respect to accessibility and concerns for the future, going beyond case studies focused on a single collector with more cross-sectional perspectives on behaviour of the collectors and how it reflects the period in which they lived. Issues of the role played by museums, actors and intermediaries, but also by markets, will also be addressed.
