The contest featured 178 videos from 94 schools across the country
Tomás Oliveira, 17, a student at the António Arroio Artistic School, in Lisbon, is the winner of the abcovid.pt school video contest, organized by Hovione interns. The winning video, entitled “Covid-19 simplified for dummies”, explains in a simple and graphic way why we need a mask to protect ourselves from the coronavirus.
Second in the contest was Daniela Lemos, 15, a student at Almeida Garrett High School, in Gaia, with the video “Safe Holidays“, an animation about the precautions to be taken to avoid contagion.
The third-place winner is Miguel Almeida, 17, from Escola Secundária Tomaz Pelayo, in Santo Tirso, with “Protect those around you”, a film whose main objects are the objects that protect us from the virus on a daily basis. The distinguished students received, respectively, 3 thousand, 1500, and one thousand euros.
At the award ceremony, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Guy Villax, CEO of Hovione, stressed the importance of the video repository that now animates the abcovid.pt website, “the videos illustrate many situations that must be taught, I am counting with schools to put these videos to work in the fight against Covid-19”.
Taking into account the number of videos in the competition, the jury decided to award eight honorable mentions:
The funniest video: Luna and Nino Roche, 16, from the French International Lyceum of Porto: “Anti-Corona Power”.
More persistent authors: Vinícius Rodrigues Manso and Eurico de Jesus André, aged 17 and 16, from the Afonso Lopes Vieira Secondary School, Leiria, who selected eight works for the final stage of the competition (all available here).
Award for the best artistic work: Rebeca Sampaio, 18 years old, Francisco Franco High School, Funchal, “Draw Covid19”.
The best scientific work: Maria Inês Ferreira, 14, Escola Secundária Augusto Gomes, Matosinhos, “What to do in isolation before infection with the new coronavirus?”.
The best technical work: Rui Reis, 17 years old, Professional School of Communication and Image, Lisbon, “The Next Page – ABCovid”.
The abcovid.pt contest came from Hovione interns, who felt that there was a need for action in the area of prevention and the dissemination of information on the behaviors that young people should follow to minimize the risk of infection, particularly in the school context. The abcovid.pt contest took place for 10 weeks, between June and August, with the participation of 178 videos from 94 schools across the country, made by students between 10 and 20 years old.
The jury was composed by researchers Alexandre Quintanilha, from I3S, Pedro Simas, from IMM, and Mafalda Paiva, from Hovione, and youtuber Sofia Barbosa.
