The 20th edition of the Tour of the English takes to the road this Saturday, with departures from Lisbon and Porto, and hundreds of classics that represent the historic British automotive industry and culture.
The Automóvel Club de Portugal event, the largest of its kind in Europe, takes participants to discover the charms of Alentejo and the Central region.
It was in 2004 that the ACP organized, for the first time, a tour dedicated solely to classic English-made cars, reviving the spirit that millions of aficionados around the world fell in love with, with brands such as Bentley, Jaguar, MG, Rolls Royce, Triumph, Morgan, Lotus, Aston Martin, Ford, Riley, Land Rover, Austin Morris or Austin-Healey. Starting from Lisbon, the event grew, also expanding to the city of Porto and established itself as one of the biggest themed tours in Europe, reaching its 20th edition this year.
This Saturday, hundreds of classics will spread charm in the two locations of Tour of the English: from Lisbon towards Alentejo and Évora, and from Porto towards Anadia, in the Bairrada region. Among the vast and diverse lot of cars, a highlight is the oldest car on this Passeio dos Ingleses, an MG J2 with almost a century of history, manufactured in 1932.
Parque Eduardo VII is where competitors gather in Lisbon, between 9:00 am and 9:30 am. Departure is at 10 am and the large group – the largest ever in Lisbon – will have the Convento do Espinheiro, in Évora, as its final destination. Halfway through the route, participants divide into a Sports Group and a Tourist Group, following their itineraries. The Tourist Group will stop to visit Monte Selvagem, in Lavre, while the Sports Group will be able to accelerate at the Évora Kartódromo, in a Regularity test.
In Porto, the gathering takes place in Foz, also between 9:00 am and 9:30 am, with departure taking place at 10:00 am. The final destination is Quinta do Encontro, in Anadia, where participants can visit the Winery. Halfway through the route, the Tourist Group visits the Macinhata do Vouga Railway Museum, while the Sports Group competes in a Regularity test in the centre of the city of Anadia. After lunch, follow a visit to the Bairrada Wine Museum.
