Sport and tourism are once again hand in hand in one of the benchmark events on the European triathlon circuit, which will once again take place in Quarteira, on the 25th and 26th of March. The Quarteira International Triathlon – Carlos Gravata advances to its 21st edition and will include three events, two international and one national team competition.
The beautiful scenery of Quarteira will host the three competitions with the three segments of the modality: the athletes swim on the beach next to the Hotel D. José, go through the first transition to mount the bicycles, and pedal along the main avenues of the parish, in a route that, despite being mostly flat, it has some challenges. Afterward, the participants leave their bicycles in the transition park to run along Quarteira’s promenade, where they will enjoy the usual applause from the enthusiastic public.
The program kicks off on Saturday, March 25th, with the European Elite Women’s and Men’s Cup competitions, with the participation of approximately 150 athletes. Regular guests such as Melanie Santos, Inês Rico, André Silva, or João Pereira, as well as athletes from Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, or Holland, among others, join this edition.
On Sunday, the Junior European Cup competitions for men and women take place, with a start list of 140 registered in both categories. Among the youngsters who will be in action will be high-level Portuguese athletes such as João Nuno Batista, Gabriel Santos, Duarte Fernandes, Maria Gonçalves, Matilde Santos, or Lectícia Magalhães. The event culminates with the second stage of the Portuguese Cup where record participation of approximately 450 athletes is expected.
The Quarteira race usually has a large audience that applauds tirelessly along the route, a fact that motivates the participation of national and international triathletes. As it has excellent conditions for the practice of Triathlon and is one of the first competitions of the season, this event includes some high-level athletes who participate with the aim of training and assessing their competitive level.
The Elite European Cup is disputed over the Olympic distance (1500 meters swimming, 40 km cycling, and 10 km running) and the sprint distance in the junior category and in the Portuguese Cup (750 meters swimming, 20 km cycling, and 5 km running). run).
Quarteira has been over the years a destination for many triathletes and for the organization of the race, surrendered to the excellent conditions they find here.“We’ve got the weather, we got the venue, we got the town that is very helpful… .It’s spectacular”/ “We have the climate, we have the location, we have the city which is very useful… It’s spectacular”, says Chris Kitchen, from the European Triathlon Union.
