25th anniversary of Timor-Leste

Bearing in mind the referendum that took place on August 30, 1999, in Timor-Leste, and which opened the doors to international recognition of the country’s independence, UCCLA salutes the people of Timor-Leste, remembering the thrill of solidarity with the victims of the struggle for independence, symbolized in the events seen in the Santa Cruz cemetery that spread around the world.

The viewing of these events led to an immediate reaction from all Portuguese-speaking peoples who, together with other peoples from all continents, generated a chain of solidarity towards the just struggle of the people of Timor-Leste in favour of freedom and independence.

For 25 years, Timor-Leste has occupied its rightful place in the UN, in the CPLP and four of its cities are now members of the UCCLA.

UCCLA is also proud to have designed part of the recovery of public buildings and parks damaged or destroyed as a result of the invasion that the territory of Timor-Leste was subject to, before independence, and to have had its collaborators deployed for around four years in Dili to monitor the work. Likewise, he is proud to have seen an application for a recent multidisciplinary project for the city of Dili presented to the European Union in partnership with the Lisbon City Council and the Dili Municipal Authority and having been approved for three years, being executed 8 months before its end.
