33 Bands from Across the Country Parade in Lisbon
Avenida da Liberdade, December 1st
Avenida da Liberdade hosts the grand national parade of philharmonic bands on December 1st, an initiative integrated into the celebrations of the day marking the Restoration of Independence in Portugal.
In this 12th edition, 33 bands will parade down the avenue, representing various recreational associations and philharmonic societies, many of them centuries old, from different parts of the country.
Opening the XII National Parade of Philharmonic Bands is the Associação Recreativa Os Mareantes do Rio Douro, a group from Vila Nova de Gaia, with 300 years of history, which keeps alive the tradition of the São Gonçalo festivities. Composed of about 50 men, their drum group animates festivals and pilgrimages throughout the country and abroad.
Starting at 3 PM, next to the Monument to the Dead of the Great War, the parade ends at Restauradores Square with a joint performance by all participating bands of the Hymn of Maria da Fonte, the Hymn of the Restoration, and the National Anthem “A Portuguesa”. This year’s presentation is under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel António Manuel Cardoso Rosada, Head of the Air Force Band, with the special participation of PSP Tenor Pedro Tavares.
Lisbon thus once again hosts this initiative that brings together hundreds of musicians from various generations to celebrate and give visibility to a centuries-old musical tradition, decisive in the artistic and professional training of young people throughout the country.
The National Parade of Philharmonic Bands is an initiative organised by the 1st of December Movement, the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal, the Lisbon City Council, and EGEAC.
