48th edition of the Aveiro Book Fair

Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Manuel Alegre, Miguel Esteves Cardoso, Joana Marques and Luísa Sobral will be present

The initiative is part of the programming of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture

From June 21st to July 7th, Praça do Rossio and Mercado do Peixe, in Aveiro, host more than 40 multidisciplinary proposals from an exhibition and book sales area, poetry sessions aboard policers, concerts, interviews, debate tables, book presentations, concert conversations, children’s programming and dj sets.

Entry is free.

Promoted by the Aveiro City Council (CMA), the 48th edition of the Aveiro Book Fair returns to one of the most emblematic places in the city, Rossio. After the requalification works, this new space allows the reorganization of exhibitors to have a greater variety and number of participants, going from 29 to 50 exhibitors, compared to 2023.

This expansion implies a different organization of the space, allowing the separation between the fair and the activities, which find the stage at Mercado do Peixe. In the words of the president of CMA, José Ribau Esteves, “This is the right time to reinvent the event, focusing on an increasingly eclectic and international program, bringing to Aveiro some of the most relevant figures in Portuguese-language literature”. The mayor also adds that “the aim is to develop a literary and cultural event that stimulates debate in the city and invites citizens to reflect on the world in which we live.”

With a thematic universe focused on emigration, immigration, transnationality, the art of departure and the 500 years of Camões, the Aveiro Book Fair is the stage for debating some of today’s most sensitive topics. The opening session will be attended by Manuel Alegre. Over more than two weeks of programming, there will also be interviews and debates with names such as Miguel Esteves Cardoso, Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Dulce Maria Cardoso, Martim Sousas Tavares, Joana Marques, Rui Couceiro, Patrícia Reis, Rosa Alice Branco, Fernando Pinto Amaral, Francisca Camelo, Afonso Reis Cabral, Álvaro Curia, Isabel Rio Novo, Luca Argel, Marta Hugon and Arthur Larrue. Also noteworthy is the conversation “Towards Eternity” between the greatest Portuguese science popularizer, Carlos Fiolhais, and one of the world’s most talented and promising researchers in the field of biotechnology and global bestseller, the Danish Nicklas Brendborg (the youngest finalist at the Royal Society Science Book Prize). The range of international guests is filled with names such as Stênio Gardel (winner of the National Book Award), Victor Vidal (winner of the 2023 Leya Prize), Ondjaki and Tati Bernardi.

The musical program is completed with DJ sets and live shows by Samba Sem Fronteiras, Samba da Ria and “A Jigsaw”. The latter, with a series of small concerts of songs by sailors, pirates, and fishermen, with artists who have long dedicated themselves to musical universes closely linked to the feeling of departure.

The Aveiro Book Fair also focuses on Fanzines and the Fantastic Universe. The “Zine Talks” conversation cycle, curated by Zine City, focuses on alternative publishing, with creators and authors of fanzines from across the country. The conversation cycle “The fantastic world of literature”, curated by Convergência, features authors from the fantastic universe and speculative history such as Nuno Almeida, David Soares, Luís Silva, Michel Alex and Mário Nuno Neves.

The program is completed with poetry sessions aboard traditional moliceiros, Aveiro authors’ evenings and the children’s space “Lilliput”, which this year incorporates the International Meeting of Literature, Illustration and Publishing for Children.

All sessions have free entry and take place at Mercado do Peixe, simultaneously with the exhibition and book sales space, in Rossio. The entire program can be consulted on the Aveiro City Council website and followed through the Aveiro Book Fair’s social networks.
