The Cape Verdean hitmaker’s new single debuts in the wake of the opening of the summer festival season — she performed last weekend in Praia, on the occasion of the Gamboa Festival.
It may seem counterintuitive to hear Neyna asking for “Calma” in a variety of languages, when her music — and this song in particular — has exactly the opposite effect. But it is with “Calma” that she returns to solo releases after releasing her debut project in August of last year, an album that took her on tour through a series of countries, from France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands and even Portugal (with a notable stop at the 10th edition of Rock in Rio Lisbon).
In the vein of Oceans — a work composed of a handful of irresistible themes —, “Calma” combines the seductive power of the Cape Verdean singer and composer’s voice with the persuasive beats that run through her entire repertoire.
With a still recent recording career, Neyna has stood out as a very promising voice in the entire Portuguese-speaking world due to the artistic maturity that reflects in her music. Even more so, considering that she has only just begun. And with all the “Calma” that characterises her, the road ahead will be very long.
