A Comuna in Almada with The Street of Hell
A Comuna – Research Theatre will be in Almada at TMJB, with text by Antonio Onetti: The Street of Hell. The show is directed by Hugo Franco and will be on display from January 31st to February 2nd, Friday and Saturday at 9pm and Sunday at 4pm.
Written by Antonio Onetti, one of the most relevant voices in contemporary Spanish drama, Hell Street reveals the complexity of human relationships through the stories of Juani, Toni and Paqui, three women whose lives intertwine in the small universe of a supermarket.
This Street of Hell, more than a place in the Seville Fair, is a metaphor for the chaotic emotional path that the three girls go through. Working as cash register clerks, these young women face personal and collective dilemmas, aggravated by the revelation that they unknowingly share the same lover. Between tensions and moments of hilarity, this play addresses some universal themes, such as friendship, betrayal and the struggle to find one’s own identity.
Everything happens in a reality “beyond the unfathomable”: a Sevillian dance competition at the city’s annual Fair ends up triggering a conflict between Juani, Toni and Paqui, who see this dispute as an opportunity for change. For all three, winning this competition has a very prosaic and palpable side: the first prize money is a desperate form of salvation. In an attempt to resolve their existential issues, these girls allow themselves to be carried away by desire and ambition, questioning the relationships they have developed with each other, as colleagues and friends. In this piece there is no night, nor are there pauses. The action is constant, reality is distorted — and strangeness is the best way to describe what is happening on stage.
