The second A Date with Lux of 2023 will take place on March 22nd at 9:30 pm, at Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente, in Coimbra, and will have Surma as a guest.
Surma’s career has shed a special and rare light, translated by awards and impressive achievements that explain to us the scope of her music, her ideas, and her personality. Along with the extensive tour he took to show his debut album “Antwerpen“, Surma also accumulated numerous side projects – soundtracks, sound design, music for theater and dance, collaborations with other musicians – showing his energy, but also his generosity and willingness to go further, doing more and, above all, different. The new album “alla” is a challenge without barriers, where he is surrounded by several participations from different musical genres to further thicken and consolidate his very own universe. On stage, he presents him in a trio format which, in addition to Débora Umbelino, also includes accomplices João Hasselberg and Pedro Melo Alves.
It is curious that this trio formation was thought of when the new album was being recorded and that it premiered precisely in Coimbra, at Convento São Francisco, in early March 2020, still covering an old repertoire.
Three years later, Surma’s new life and the career of “alla” live began with a series of seven dates that stepped on stages such as Culturgest in Lisbon, Coliseu do Porto, Belgian Botanique or North American South By Southwest and the trio is now preparing to return to the city where they were born, for a unique performance at the Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente, on March 22nd.
All A Date with Lux concerts is always based on a close relationship with Lux Records, Rui Ferreira’s publisher. In this case, the Coimbra label has a strong connection to Omnichord, home of Surma, based in Leiria. These publishing projects have already produced albums together, as was the case with “Drafty Moon”, by Bloom, JP Simões‘ alter-ego. This synergy is a consequence of the relationship between Hugo Ferreira, founder of Omnichord, and Rui Ferreira: they met at Rádio Universidade de Coimbra, the radio school where they met. The choice of Surma for another edition of A Date with Lux also comes from the desire to make artists present new discography in Coimbra.
For João Silva from Blue House, “the concept of A Date With Lux is a bit of a reflection of what Blue House is as a structure, that is, creating synergies and partnerships with those who also try to be culturally active in the city of Coimbra, in this case, Lux Records and TAGV, to bring interesting names in Portuguese music (and beyond) to Coimbra and that we are sure will make this “meeting” memorable.”
According to Rui Ferreira, “Surma recorded three exclusive versions for the program “Cover de Brussels” that will be presented on the March 16th broadcast of the Radio University of Coimbra program.” Who knows if the next A Date With Lux will not also bring one of these surprises?
Tickets for A Date with Lux with Surma are already on sale, at bol.pt or at the TAGV ticket office, with prices ranging from 10 to 12 euros.
