Discovering the bees in the Cabeço de Montachique Park

The most recent activity of the program “There is Life in Montachique” promoted by the Municipality of Loures in the Municipal Park of Cabeço de Montachique, was dedicated to wild bees.

This activity was accompanied by TAGIS – Center for the Conservation of Butterflies of Portugal, which since 2020 has been carrying out a study on wild bees in the Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park, in Fanhões, where 62 species have been identified to date.

In Portugal there are at least 750 different species of bees, most of which were recently identified, following the work of the Red List of Invertebrates, which demonstrates that Portugal, despite its size, is a country with a lot of biodiversity.

After a brief introduction, participants in the activity Let’s Meet the Montachique Bees took a walk through the park. On this tour, it was possible to observe a considerable variety of bee species, among which two that had not been identified in Montachique until now: Hoplitis adunca and Halictus smaragdulus.

The next activity of the program There is Life in Montachique – “Um lanche esbugalhado: bugalhos, bugalhitos e maçãs de cuco” – takes place on September 11, between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm. This activity will be accompanied by researcher Alejandro López Núñez, who is dedicated to the study of different galls, also known as bugalhos.
