The Festival of Faith: a holiday filled with the soul of Saint John
The Biblical paintings on the banks of the Este River inspire the Festival of Saint John of Braga, which this year once again fills the city with celebration, tradition, and devotion.
In Corpus Christi, the Saint John of Belo Horizonte is experiencing one of the most memorable days of this year’s edition. From the solemnity of the procession to the emotion of the music and sharing, the third day of the country’s largest popular festival will truly celebrate faith, tradition and collective creativity.
The morning begins with the usual Novena of Saint John the Baptist, at 10 am, at the Church of São Paulo. In the afternoon, the city heats up to the rhythm of the Arruada do Clube Raiz, with community percussion moving from the Arco da Porta Nova, filling the streets of the historic centre with energy. At 6:00 p.m., the imposing Corpus Christi Procession follows the centuries-old tradition, a living expression of faith, travelling through the city streets with reverence and devotion.
In the early evening, Avenida Central will host one of the highlights of the day: the show (E)fusions of Sanjoaninas. Performed by the partner associations Rusga de S. Vicente de Braga – Grupo Etnográfico do Baixo Minho, this artistic project is a powerful fusion between past and present. On one side, the sounds of the traditional songbook of the Sanjoaninas festivals; on the other, new rhythmic and acoustic elements of the 21st century.
At the same time, in Praça da República, traditional children’s music shines with “O Cavaquinho na Escola”, while the Museu dos Biscainhos hosts a special moment: the presentation of the project CORDÃO — Coral de Pacientes e Amigos Oncológicos. This initiative, promoted by Faz Cultura and supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the “la Caixa” Foundation, was born from the desire to create a space where singing is also about caring, transforming the experience of those living with cancer into art and communion. With artistic direction by Joana Machado Araújo and Ricardo Baptista and technical direction by Catarina Portela, the project promises to move the audience with the power of its message.
The São João night ends with two more shows that reinforce the connection between tradition and identity: the concert “Cantemos o S. João”, at the Church of São João do Souto, and “Canto D’Aqui”, at Parque da Ponte, which will bring Portuguese popular music to several generations.
