“A força do hábito”, by Thomas Bernhard, at TMJB

Teatro das Beiras will be at the TMJB, with A força do hábito, by Thomas Bernhard. The show is staged by Nuno Carinhas, and will be on stage on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of November.

Garibaldi, the tyrannical director of a circus, struggles in vain to have his troupe play Schubert’s Trout to perfection. But the incidents pile up, in a circus stutter of desperate attempts to play together. Apparently, the only thing they manage to do is daily destroy the masterpiece of the (not by chance) Austrian composer. However, it is necessary to rehearse – every day rehearse. Rehearse as a way to face death. “All that’s left is to go in with the bow blowing into death,” says Garibaldi.

Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989), whose writing fixed with brilliance and modernity the robust circularity of obsessions, made in A força do hábito a portrait of reluctant artists. Exiled, traveling, the artists hate each other, they don’t understand each other, although they need each other to play together, to stay alive. Alert senses: one misstep and it’s the artist’s death. From land to land, from season to season, the journey with hope for the infinitely difficult, the unattainable. Bernhard’s homage to theater, circus and music people, with verrine and tenderness.” (Nuno Faces)

Born in 1974 in Covilhã, Teatro das Beiras – originally conceived as a theatrical decentralization project for Beira Interior – became professionalized in 1994. Based on the translation signed by Alberto Pimenta, this creation of ‘A força do hábito‘ marks a double debut by Nuno Carinhas: this is the director’s first time in charge of the Teatro das Beiras cast and, at the same time, his first staging of a text by Bernhard. Also a painter, set designer and costume designer, Carinhas directed the São João National Theater (TNSJ) between 2009 and 2018.
