‘A Herdade’ in the list of 93 movies competing for Oscars

Tiago Guedes’ Portuguese film ‘A Herdade’ is on the list of 93 films announced Monday night by the Hollywood Academy to compete for Oscar for Best International Film at the 92nd edition of the most important film awards.

For the first time in the history of these awards, the award will be called Best International Film, not Best Foreign Language Film, after academy members approved this year’s name change.

Of the selected candidates, the organization will choose, in December, a total of 10 official candidates for the gold figurine.

Latin American aspirants are ‘Heroic Losers’ from Argentina; ‘I miss you’ from Bolivia; ‘Invisible Life’, from Brazil; ‘Spider’ from Chile; ‘Monkeys’ from Colombia; ‘The Awakening of Ants’ by Costa Rica; ‘A Translator’, from Cuba, ‘The Projectionist’, from the Dominican Republic; ‘The longest night’ from Ecuador; ‘Blood, Passion and Coffee’ from Honduras and ‘The Chambermaid’ from Mexico.

Complete Panama’s ‘Everybody Changes’ list; ‘Altarpiece’ from Peru; ‘The Herdade’, from Portugal; ‘Pain and Glory’ from Spain; ‘The Moneychanger’ from Uruguay and ‘Being Impossible’ from Venezuela.

On December 16, candidates will be announced who will move to the next round in the Oscar vote.

Finally, final nominations for all categories of the upcoming Oscars will be announced on January 13, 2020, while the ceremony will take place February 9 at the Hollywood Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

So far, the record number of entries has been 92 in the 2017 edition. Last year, out of 87 films submitted, it was ‘Roma’ to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film and Alfonso Cuarón was awarded the golden statuette for Best Director for this movie.

For this year, media specialists in the film industry cite Spanish painter Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Pain and Glory’ as a favorite, as well as ‘Parasite’ (South Korea), Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy that beat Palma of Gold at the Cannes Film Festival, and Ladj Ly’s French film ‘Les Miserables’.
