Margarida Vila-Nova takes the stage at Teatro Maria Matos with the Portuguese version of “À PRIMEIRA VISTA (PRIMA FACIE)”, by Suzie Miller, directed by Tiago Guedes.
Prima Facie —Latin legal expression meaning: At first sight.
Simultaneously a powerful monologue and a breathtaking legal thriller, À Primeira Vista (PRIMA FACIE) is one of the most recognized plays of recent years. An incisive examination of power, consent and law that garnered several awards and nominations, including the Tony, Lawrence Olivier, What’s on Stage, Drama Desk, Evening Standard and Australian Writers’ Guild.
Teresa is a brilliant young lawyer. Coming from a humble working-class family, she rose through her merit and work, establishing herself as a gifted defence lawyer. She defends, cross-examines and wins case after case consecutively. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of law, the burden of proof and morality diverge, at an intersection where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.
Prima Facie premiered in 2019 at the Griffin Theatre, Sydney; toured Australia in 2021; was performed in London’s West End in 2022 and reached Broadway in 2023. In 2020 it won the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Drama, the David Williamson Award for Outstanding Theater Writing and the prestigious Major Australian Writers’ Guild Award in all categories of theatre, cinema and television. In 2022 he was nominated for five Lawrence Olivier Awards, winning Best Play and Best Actress; for 4 Tonys in 2023, where Jodie Comer won, once again, the award for Best Actress. In the same year, the show was nominated for more than 20 awards, having been recognized with Best Play and Best Actress at What’s on Stage and Best Actress at Drama Desk and Evening Standard.
