After all, there was another before Juliet: “Rosaline, Romeo’s Ex”

New original musical by UAU

The new UAU production premieres on September 9, 2026 and will be showing at the Oceanos Auditorium (Casino Lisboa).

The tragic love story between Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a classic of literature that all generations know by heart. But the new UAU production, “Rosaline, Romeo’s Ex,” brings an irresistible twist to this love story on stage.

Between encounters and missed connections, this new musical puts the spotlight on Rosaline, a character briefly mentioned in the original classic, Romeo’s first love and, to complicate matters, Juliet’s cousin. Little is known about Rosaline, very little. But, after all, there was (that) love before Juliet.

With text and direction by Renato Arroyo, this romantic musical comedy tells the story behind the story and reveals that, after all, the love that leaves romantics sighing… isn’t quite as we’ve been told. It’s giving… drama.

“I’m biased, but I truly believe we’re building something special. Rosaline manages to reach both those who live and breathe musicals and those who usually shy away from them, and that, for me, is its greatest strength,” says Renato Arroyo (director).

The new original musical from UAU features original music by Miguel Amorim (composer of musicals such as Severa, Laura and Fátima by Filipe La Féria) and Filipe de Albuquerque, and creative support from Inês Branco and João Albuquerque Alves.

Miguel Amorim (composer) adds: “We felt this was a rare opportunity: to create something special, but above all something that was missing. There’s a truth in these songs that has guided us from day one.”

“The idea was always to create something new, something fresh. And seeing the reactions of those who hear these songs for the first time… It’s priceless. It’s proof that we’re touching on something genuine,” adds Filipe de Albuquerque (composer and lyricist).

In “Rosaline, Romeo’s Ex,” what begins as a disastrous attempt to separate the most iconic couple in literature transforms into an unexpected journey of self-discovery and self-love that proves there are always two sides to every story, and that what seems perfect isn’t always true.

Starting September 9th, Rosaline’s story arrives at the Oceanos Auditorium (Casino Lisboa), where it will be showing during the last quarter of the year. Shows will take place from Thursday to Saturday at 9 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 4 pm.
