ÁGORA returns to Leiria Castle in September and October

Among the artistic proposals are shown by Niño de Elche & Raül Refree, Marina Herlop, Alabaster Deplume, and Julius Gabriel, among others.

After a first weekend of ÁGORA with shows by Marta Pereira da Costa, Angelica Salvi and La Familia Gitana, there will be two more weekends of multidisciplinary programming dialoguing with one of the icons of the city’s historical-cultural heritage, Leiria Castle. ÁGORA crosses memory, the present and what is to come by exploring diverse artistic territories, from performing arts to music, visual arts to installation. On the first weekends of September and October, there are, among others, shows by Niño de Elche & Raül Refree, Marina Herlop, Julius Gabriel, Alabaster Deplume, Romeu Bairos, 6 Violas, artistic residency by artists Surma & Inês Condeço and more to be announced.

Saturday, September 7th, begins with a concert by Julius Gabriel, a German saxophonist dedicated to improvisation and contemporary music, in a mix of finger percussion on the saxophone with a continuous siren whisper emanating from the instrument, provoking euphoria, fear and satisfaction at the same time.

At Igreja da Pena, we will have a special show by Niño de Elche & Raül Refree, two sound alchemists, and musicians who have modernized flamenco codes and collaborated with artists like Rosalía. C. Tangana, Rodrigo Cuevas, among others.

The day ends with Marina Herlop, a Catalan conservatoire-trained composer, vocalist and pianist, who channelled her environment in a truly post-human way, performing “alien” vocal acrobatics, drawing inspiration from South Indian music, while planting a diversity of sonic seeds that bloom brilliantly in its sumptuous garden of chimerical compositions.

Multi-instrumentalist Surma and pianist and composer Inês Condeço, both from Leiria, are invited to hold an artistic residency and present their sound universes, on Sunday, September 8th.

Along with the music program, on Sunday there will also be proposals for the youngest with the workshop and concert of the A Música Dá Trabalho project. In the first part of the activity, five workstations representing professions in the field of music are set up and, in the end, there is a small showcase of musicians from different Omnichord projects who play versions of the discography, in a didactic and interactive show with the audience present.

In the underground space of Cisternas, the artistic installation “Thalassa” opens, a site-specific installation by multidisciplinary artists Ângela Bismarck and Diogo Mendes, which proposes to map the void, the unknown and the ethereal. Through the image or its suggestion, the duo walks on the margins of concrete matter, exploring and anatomizing what is beyond infinity. “Thalassa” is the debut collaboration between the two artists, in a fusion of their practices, video art and lighting design respectively.

The usual Leiria Castle ticket guarantees access to ÁGORA activities, with capacity limited to the capacity of the spaces. Its purchase will be made directly at the Castle.

Access to the castle is free for residents of the municipality of Leiria upon presentation of proof of address and identification.

ÁGORA is a cultural project, over three weekends, proposes a program of music, performing arts, and artistic installations and activates the enjoyment and reflection of the (im)material heritage within Leiria Castle.
