After some interruptions in activity and a change in line-up, Ala dos Namorados returns with João Gil and Nuno Guerreiro at the helm, on guitar and vocals. The band, which celebrates 30 years since its founding, is now preparing to release a new album.
Nuno Guerreiro does not deny that this return was the topic of conversation with João Gil every time the two got together to sing. “The energy and light we feel when we share the stage is truly transparent and the audience feels that truth,” he says. Now they have two concerts announced, for Loulé and Póvoa de Varzim, where they will revive the hits known by all (such as Loucos de Lisboa) and also reveal some of the new songs. On the 30th of January, they will hold an open rehearsal at the Capitólio, with limited capacity and tickets on sale at Blueticket and at the usual places at €8.
Ala dos Namorados has on the shelf a platinum disc – Soltase o Beijo and a gold disc – Cristal, from which Fim do Mundo came out. Eight studio albums, two live albums, and a Greatest Hits compilation later, the musicians return to where they were once happy – the studio – to record the band’s ninth album of originals.
According to João Gil, “in the new songs runs the blood of the mestizo city [Lisbon].” These will have verses by eminent Portuguese writers and lyricists, such as Mia Couto, José Eduardo Agualusa, Fernando Pessoa, Maria do Rosário Pedreira, Zeca Baleiro, and João Gil himself.
Nuno Guerreiro and João Gil are joined by Rúben Alves on piano, Alexandre Frazão on drums, Nelson Cascais on double bass, and Luís Cunha on trumpet. João Gil has no doubts about the public’s expectations: “In the beginning, we always looked for rigor; now we will have to live up to it.”
