David Bowie’s debut album reissued in Deluxe version and on vinyl

July 26th

New editions have exclusive lineups

On July 26th, David Bowie’s groundbreaking debut album will be reissued on CD and coloured vinyl. Originally released on June 1, 1966, David Bowie was an artist on the verge of genius, at the height of Swinging London.

Critics at the time commented; with “NME” praising Bowie’s sound as “very refreshing” and hailing him as “an up-and-coming talent”. The “Melody Maker” praises the album as “a uniquely rewarding record” with “excellent” production, while expressing surprise that Bowie has not yet made a bigger impact on the pop scene. Meanwhile, “Disc & Music Echo” praises the album, describing it as “a remarkable and creative debut album from a 19-year-old Londoner” and declaring Bowie “a new talent that deserves attention”.

With such rave reviews, this release promises to rekindle Bowie’s early legacy and introduce his visionary artistry to a new generation of listeners.

This reissue includes the original stereo album, produced by Mike Vernon, with a further 14 tracks, including the first fruits of Bowie’s long relationship with producer Tony Visconti; “Let Me Sleep Beside You”, “Karma Man”, “In The Heat Of The Morning” and “London Bye Ta-Ta”, the latter making its vinyl debut on this reissue.

Looking back on his debut album many years later, with characteristic self-deprecation, Bowie reflected: “Lyrically, I think I was trying hard to be something – the storyteller. Musically it’s quite bizarre. I don’t know where I was. It seemed to have roots everywhere: in rock, vaudeville, music hall, and I don’t know what. I didn’t know if it was Max Miller or Elvis Presley.”

These early recordings reveal a serious young artist at the beginning of his career, working hard on material he passionately believed in. David Bowie put his heart into this song – and it shows.
