Alceu Valença returns to Portugal
February 8th in Porto and February 9th in Lisbon
Brazilian singer and composer ALCEU VALENÇA is back in Portugal to present the Valencianas concert, where he will perform alongside the OURO PRETO ORCHESTRA, conducted by maestro RODRIGO TOFFOLO.
The concerts will take place on February 8th, at 9:30 pm, at Casa da Música, in Porto, and on February 9th, at 9 pm, at Centro Cultural Belém, in Lisbon.
One of the most renowned artists of his generation, ALCEU VALENÇA has a career spanning more than fifty years with a series of timeless hits, included in several soundtracks of TV Globo soap operas, including “Anunciação”, “Belle de Jour”, “Tropicana”, “Coração Bobo”, “Cavalo de Pau” and “Táxi Lunar”.
The show presents the best of the renowned composer’s popular work adapted to the world of concert music. After passing through Tivoli (2015) and Casino Estoril (2020) in previous seasons, Valencianas returns to Portugal for a new and unmissable performance.
“It is always a joy to present the Valencianas, especially in Portugal, where we recorded the second concert album and where we have a loyal and enthusiastic audience. I feel like Pavarotti himself singing alongside these young and talented musicians”, laughs Alceu, who currently divides his time between Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Lisbon. In Lisbon, he has owned a property in São Jorge Castle for ten years, where he spends frequent and inspiring periods.
For maestro Rodrigo Toffolo, “Alceu is an icon of Brazilian music for his eternal boldness and contemporaneity. Valencianas combines the genres of the backlands and the Brazilian countryside, so essential in his work, with the Orchestra’s versatile concert music. A way not only to pay homage to this master but also to the profound Brazilianness that Alceu’s work brings to us”, explains the maestro.
Alceu Valença’s work affirms the identity of music from the Brazilian northeast, especially that of Pernambuco, the composer’s home state. Genres such as forró, baião, xote, toada and frevo, among others, form the basis of their repertoire, recreated in contemporary pop language.
The partnership with ORQUESTRA OURO PRETO (which this year celebrates 25 years of existence) began ten years ago, when conductor Rodrigo Toffolo and arranger Matheus Freire adapted part of Valença’s work for concert music, especially for strings. The show was given the title Valencianas at the suggestion of cultural producer Paulo Rogério Lage, creator and stage director of the concert.
The Valencianas‘ first album was recorded live in 2014, at the Palácio das Artes, in Minas Gerais, the home state of the Ouro Preto Orchestra. The impact was immediate. In addition to filling theatres and concert halls across the country, the project won the Prêmio da Música Brasileira – the most important in the segment – in 2015 as the Best MPB album of that year.
The second volume was recorded in 2020, live at Casa da Música, in the city of Porto, continuing the successful trajectory of the project, with new arrangements for themes not included in the first album, such as “Eu Vou Fazer Você Voar”, “Samba do Tempo”, “Solidão” and “Como Dois Animais”.
