On the second day, the Almada Festival begins at 6 pm, with the Colloquium on the Esplanade of the D. António da Costa School. To the conversation will be Inês Barahona and Miguel Fragata, creators of Terminal (The State of the World).

At 8 pm, there is music on the Esplanade, with the trio Bissau-Lisboa. At 21h, the exhibition is inaugurated at Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite 25 de Abril: The Days, the People and the Symbols, with documentation by José Pacheco Pereira and Carlos Simões Nuno, the plastic design is by José Manuel Castanheira. at 9:30 pm, three shows: Beyond Pain, in the Experimental Room and Source of Anger, in the Main Room of TMJB, and Jogging (Honor Show this year, choice of the public in the last edition), in the Incredible Almadense.

The play Beyond the Pain (Beyond Caring, in the original) consisted of the debut as author and, simultaneously, the great irruption of Alexander Zeldin in the theatrical scene. CTA held the absolute premiere of this piece in Portugal in March 2022, winning the SPA award for best show of the year. Under the sign of raw and often brutal social realism, we observe and listen to four temporary workers of different generations: Susan, Grace, Becky and Phil; and Ian, the night shift manager at the meat processing plant where they do the cleaning. In a universe of human relations as precarious and equivocal as labour relations, Zeldin describes the cadence and hardness of the work these employees perform and the relief (relative) that brings every pause, moments in which interpersonal relationships are weaving, always fleeting, shy, fragile. As soon as the shift is over, they’ll return to anonymity, brownish and ineluctable.

Playwright and director, Alex Zeldin (n. 1985) has had a dazzling rise in the British and European theatre scene in the last decade. After Beyond Caring, his repertoire was enriched with the pieces Love (2016), Faith, Love and Charity (2019), A Death in the Family (2022, original French) and The Confessions (2023). He was Artist in Residence at the National Theatre in 2017 and, just two years later, became an associate director of that institution. In 2020, he became Associate Artist of the Théâtre National de l’Odéon (Paris) and, the following year, was Guest Artist of the Vienna Festival.
