According to Dora Coelho, executive director of the Tourism Association of Algarve (ATA), the agency responsible for external tourism promotion in this region, “this recognition confirms the growing interest and weight that the Algarve is conquering with the North American market, as an appealing alternative to the European destinations traditionally sought by this market. ”
Also in November, the ATA had the opportunity to receive a group of 14 travel agents in the Algarve, operating in the US and Canada, who were made aware of the potential of the region around its diversified tourism offer. quality and the possibility to participate in differentiating experiences, among them a workshop to learn how to prepare a cataplana and the realization of tastings of wines from the Algarve. This visit also included a strong networking component among participants and tourism agents in the region (ATA members) as a way of encouraging the development of business opportunities.
It should be noted that the presence of North American visitors in the Algarve has been growing significantly. From January to September of this year, the destination registered a 25.3% increase in the number of guests coming from the USA compared to the same period of 2017 (reaching a total of 64,700 guests) and an increase of 27.4% in the number of guests. which relates to overnight stays (accounting for 179,600 overnight stays in the region).
