Alice Vieira, Jorge Palma and António Variações decorated by the President

Alice Vieira, 77 years old, journalist and writer, was distinguished as Grand Officer of the Order of Public Education, an award that recognizes high services rendered to the cause of education and teaching.

In more than four decades of writing, Alice Vieira has published poetry and romance for adults, but it is in the universe of children and adolescents that she is placed, with several dozen books, among which “Rosa, minha irmã Rosa”, “Úrsula, a maior”, “Viagem à roda do meu nome” and “Meia hora para mudar a minha vida”.

In 1997, Alice Vieira was awarded the Order of Merit, in the degree of Commander, by the then President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, along with 31 other female personalities, within the scope of International Women’s Day.

Jorge Palma was today decorated with the order of the Infante D. Henrique, in a year in which he celebrated the 70th anniversary and the 45 years of the edition of the first album, “Com uma viagem na palma da mão” (1975).

Last September, Jorge Palma received the cultural merit medal from Lisbon, at the end of a concert to celebrate 70 years. At the time, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was in the audience, took the stage to say that, given this distinction by the autarchy, next will be the national tribute.

António Variações was posthumously decorated, commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, and the distinction was received by Jaime Ribeiro, one of the musician’s brothers.

Bold and irreverent, influenced by fado, popular music and pop rock, António Variações, a barber by profession and artist of vocation, died at the age of 39 in June 1984.

The musician left only two albums edited and several songs that are part of the history of Portuguese pop music, such as “Canção do engate”, “O corpo é que pagada” and “Estou além“.

António Variações‘s life and musical work gave rise to a play, a fiction film, biographies, exhibitions, shows, and an album of reinterpretations, by the Human project.
