Almagro International Theater Festival premieres four portuguese shows

The announcement was made during the presentation of the schedule for its 44th edition, which took place for the first time in Lisbon, since Portugal will be the guest country of honor.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his edition, which will run under the motto “Y el tiempo breve pasarás en flores”, a verse by Ser Ana de la Trinidad, with which the Festival maintains its commitment to give visibility to the women of the Spanish Golden Century (period between XVI and XVII centuries, which includes the Renaissance and the Baroque), will have the participation of 38 companies and a total of 84 shows, said the festival director, Ignacio García.

The festival opens on the 1st of July, at the Palacio de los Oviedo, with the delivery of the Corral Comedies Award to actress Julieta Serrano, and on the 3rd the program of Portugal will open with a poetic moment under the motto of the festival, “E you will soon spend time in flowers “, which will take place in the Corral de Comedias.

On the 2nd and 3rd of July, at the Palacio de los Oviedo, you can watch the “The contention of the Caldelas Labradors or Famous Entremés about the fishing of the Rio Minho”, by the Companhia de Teatro de Braga and the Centro Dramático Galego, from a text written in Galician and interpreted by actors from both countries, in three languages: Portuguese, Galician and Castilian.

On July 7, at AUREA, the Teatro Nacional São João presents “Castro”, staged by Nuno Cardoso, and on the 16th and 17th, Casa Palacio de los Villareal will be the stage for the “Embarcaçâo do infierno” (“Auto da Barca do Inferno”), by Gil Vicente, by Escola da Noite and Dramatic Center of Évora.

On Sunday, a concert by Os musicos do Tejo ends the Portuguese part of the program, which also includes a show by a Spanish company, Nao D’amores, who will interpret “Nise, the tragedy of Inés de Castro”.

The program of Portugal is completed with an exhibition of drawings of “Women of the Golden Century”, by the scenographer, architect and intellectual of the Portuguese theater José Manuel Castanheira, also author of the image of the poster of this year’s edition of the Festival, designed especially for the event.

The Portuguese presence will also be evident in the Iberian Dialogue Meeting, with the presence of the Portuguese Scenography Association, a meeting that consists of a series of lectures and a collective artistic installation, which aims to create a space for reflection, exchange and connection between Portuguese scenographers. and Spaniards, costume designers and stage directors who worked on the Golden Century and Baroque theme.

In addition, the Classical Theater Days of Almagro will take place under the theme “The Iberian Golden Century: Portugal and the Spanish Classical Theater.

In all, the festival will present 84 shows, including 11 premieres, seven of which are absolute.
