Amadora Jazz 2025 comes back with an excellent lineup
Carlos Bica, Hamid Drake, Luís Vicente, Mário Laginha and Myra Melford at the 13th Festival Edition
In its 13th edition and four days from 8 to 11 May, in three cultural equipments of the municipality of Amadora – Recreios da Amadora, the Cine-Teatro D. João V and Auditório de Alfornelos (TPN) – Amadora Jazz welcomes figures jazz summits on the national and global scene, while promoting young musicians in training stage.
The Festival opens on May 8th (Thursday, 9 p.m.), at Amadora Recreios, with a concert addressing the legacy of Carlos Paredes’ music, in the year of its centenary. The quartet led by pianist Mário Laginha, with Julian Argüelles (saxophone) Romeo Tristão (contrabass) and João Pereira (battery), results from an order from Theatro Circo (Braga), and will have here one of his first performances.
The next day, May 9 (Sixth, 9 p.m.), it will be Carlos Bica Quarteto’s turn to go on stage of Amadora Recreios to present 11:11, record work that jazz magazine. pt elected as a record of the year in 2024. The partners of bassist Carlos Bica, an indispensable figure of Portuguese and European jazz, are young musicians who are leaving their mark in contemporary jazz: José Soares (saxofone), Eduardo Cardinho (vibrafone) and Gonçalo Neto (guitar and banjo).
The “Splash Trio” by pianist and composer Myra Melford is presented on Saturday, May 10 (21.00 p.m.), on a unique date in our country. With Melford, there will be Michael Formanek and Cher Smith.
This year, the main novelty in the costume of the festival is the inclusion of a moment of creation in the context of an artistic residence that will take place at the Auditorium of Alfornels, joining the trumpeter Luís Vicente and percussionist Hamid Drake. After a few days of sharing, the two will perform in concert at 11 p.m. on 10 May, in the same space they worked in the previous days.
The closure of Amadora Jazz, on 11 May (Sunday, 16:00) is up to GeraJazz who, once again and as it has become a habit, goes up to the stage of the Auditorium Cineteatro D. João V.
According to Amadora City Council, “Amadora Jazz is an event that has counted on “figures of national and international jazz summits”. In this issue there will be significant projects of the jazziest medium, directed to the most diverse audiences, once again betting on the diversification of the offer and the quality of the proposals presented, seeking simultaneously to trust the public reinforcing the bet on the jazziest universe. “
For José Miguel, director of JACC, “in an edition in which all concerts deserve equal emphasis, it should be emphasized that, for the first time, Amadora Jazz welcomes a moment of creation, through an artistic residence that brings together Portuguese trumpet player Luís Vicente to Chicago percussionist Hamid Drake. They will be working for four days in the space of the Saloon Auditorium (Level Pass Theatre). The sessions and concerts with which the residence will culminate will be recorded for later record editions in the JACC Records catalogue”.
The Festival is organized by the Amadora City Council, with the Jazz Association to the Club Center as its programming partner.
Amadora Jazz tickets are for sale at https://ticketline.sapo.pt/ and on-site two hours before the concerts start, with prices ranging from 10 to 15 euros.
