Amália Rodrigues honored in open-air cinema in Lisbon

Until Sunday, in this cycle, curated by the director Diogo Varela Silva, great-nephew of Amália, and author of documentaries about his sister Celeste Rodrigues (1923-2018) and Beatriz da Conceição (1939-2015), the artistic aspect is highlighted of Amália as an actress.

Four films will be presented, at 9:30 pm, which mark different times in Amália’s artistic career (1920-1999).

Fado, História de uma Cantadeira” (1947), by Perdigão Queiroga, the documentary “The Art Of Amália” (2000), by Bruno de Almeida, Capas Negras” (1947), by Armando de Miranda andAs Ilhas Encantadas (1965), by Carlos Vilardebó.

Amália’s performance in Queiroga’s film, as the fado singer Ana Maria, earned her, in 1948, the SNI Award (National Secretariat for Information) for the Best Cinema Actress. As Ilhas Encantadas was one of the films that Amália, in several interviews, stated that she liked most to have participated.

Her interest in the film, based on a novel by Herman Melville, led her to help with tasks other than interpretation, such as set design.

At the same time, next Friday and Saturday, in Jardim do Torel, the festival “Cinema no Estendal” takes place, with short films from Portugal and abroad, from fiction to documentary, including animation and music videos, also starting at 9:30 pm.
