Ângelo Torres and the CCCV – Centro Cultural de Cabo Verde, present the play “Amílcar Geração”, a monologue in which the artist challenges us to discover AMÍLCAR CABRAL.

A man who dreamed and fought for the freedom of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, an African hero who in 2020, in a study for the magazine “BBC – World Histories Magazine”, a collective of historians and countless readers considered the second greatest world leader of all time, “someone who wielded power and had a positive impact on humanity.”

“Amílcar Cabral was chosen by the British historian Hakim Adi, a specialist in African affairs, according to whom Cabral’s fight for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde also transformed Portugal. Professor of History of Africa and the African Diaspora at the British University of Chichester, Hakim Adi remembers, when justifying the choice of Amílcar Cabral, that a large part of African countries achieved independence in the early 1960s, which did not happen with the then Portuguese colonies. He later says that “the great Amílcar Cabral”, in addition to the struggle for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, also played a leading role in the liberation of other Portuguese colonies. These armed struggles ended up resulting in a revolution in Portugal “and the beginning of a new democratic era” in the country. “ Many Africans continue to be inspired by Cabral’s great leadership. His life and work show that, whatever the obstacles, people are capable of being their liberators”, says the historian.

Among the guest historians who chose “their” leaders are the professor of History and political scientist specializing in the history of China at the University of Oxford, Rana Mitter, the professor and historian at the University of Toronto, Margaret MacMillan, or the historian and director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, Gus Casely-Hayford. Born in Guinea-Bissau on September 12, 1924, the son of Cape Verdeans, Amílcar Cabral founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC), laying the foundations of the movement that would lead to the independence of the two former colonies Portuguese.

About the play “Amílcar geração”:

“AMÍLCAR GERAÇÃO” is a dramatic monologue whose theme is the life and legacy of Amílcar Cabral. The central premise of the show is the idea that two men come together in Amílcar Cabral – one, who we call “Cabral” and another, who we call “Amílcar”. Cabral is the man who systematically and scientifically carried out a masterful plan for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Amílcar is the earthly man, who fell in love with a Trás-os-Montes woman, who studied agricultural engineering, who faced poverty in Cape Verde, Portugal and Guinea-Bissau, who liked to play football and talk. It is an eclectic show, for which the extraordinary performative qualities of actor Ângelo Torres are called upon. Director and author Guilherme Mendonça has dedicated himself in recent years to the history of African nationalism. “Amílcar Geração” appears as a continuation of this work.
