António Cabral 2019 literary prize awarded to the poet António Canteiro

The António Cabral literary prize is intended as a tribute to the Douro poet, who died in 2007, and also aims to stimulate new literary productions.

Vila Real Mayor of Culture, Eugenia Almeida, said at a press conference that this year’s edition had 136 original works of poetry, many of which were Brazilian poets.

Professor and writer Pires Cabral, from Vila-Realense Literary Guild, announced that the jury chose the book ‘If it wasn’t for the tumult of a body’, by António Canteiro, pseudonym of João Carlos Costa da Cruz, a senior director of the Board. General of Reinsertion and Prison Services, 55 years old and resident in Febres, Cantanhede.

The jury considered that it is a work that “reveals a strong poetic sensitivity” and “undeniable linguistic, imaginative and musical quality”.

The prize-winner has written novels and poetry such as’ Adobo Wall ‘,’ Around the Walls’, ‘Largo da Capella’, ‘The Solar Silence of the Mornings’,’ Soon the afternoon will be cold ‘or’ Casa of being ‘.

He also published the research work on Roma, Ethnic Issues, Ethical Issues.

The prize of 5,000 euros will be delivered on Saturday, in Vila Real, during the Meeting of Transmontanos and Durienses Writers.

The award, established in 2011, has already been awarded to Amadeu Baptista, Daniel Gonçalves and Nuno de Figueiredo.

In 2015, according to Eugénia Almeida, the jury decided not to award the award, “due to the manifest lack of quality of the originals submitted to the contest”.

António Cabral (1931-2007) has authored more than two dozen titles in the fields of poetry, dramaturgy, romance and short stories, and has developed research in the area of ​​popular games and game pedagogy.

He wrote, among others, ‘The woman and the snake’, ‘The sea and the eagles’,’ I speak to you from the mountain ‘,’ The flower and the words’, ‘Durian poems’,’ The rebel Orpheus’, ‘Here . Douro ‘,’ Popular games and teaching ‘,’ New Douro poems’, ‘There is a rumor’ or ‘Between who is’.

António Cabral, graduated in Philosophy from the University of Porto, was a professor, founded the Vila Real Regional Cultural Center, the Setentrião and Tellus magazines and the Nordeste Cultural newspaper.
