ARCOlisboa starts today with art and talks

This year’s edition of ARCOlisboa, which was due to take place this May, was canceled by the organizers, who have already set a new date for May 13-16, 2021.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Madrid International Fair (Ifema) decided to promote an event online, on the arcolisboa.com website, between today and June 16, in a partnership with the artsy.net platform. Works from the galleries selected by the fair’s organizing committee and by the commissioners of the Opening and Africa in Focus sections will be presented and marketed.

The general program of galleries has the participation of references in the Portuguese market, such as Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Filomena Soares, Pedro Cera, and Vera Cortês, in addition to emerging galleries such as Balcony, Bruno Múrias, Madragoa or Nuno Centeno.

The Opening section, organized for the first time by the independent institution KunsthalleLissabon, consists of a selection of galleries debuting at the fair and, as in the 2019 edition, curator Paula Nascimento will be responsible for the selection of the galleries of Africa in Focus program.

Through the artsy.net platform, associated with the fair’s website, contemporary art collectors will be able to explore the selection of works that each participating gallery has prepared for this digital project. In this section, the choices made by a group of curators and collectors invited to the Curators and Collectors Pick will be highlighted, among which are curators Luiza Teixeira de Freitas, Bruno Leitão and João Laia.

The ARCOlisboa Forum will feature an average of three weekly live conversations, which include the participation of artists such as Nadia Belerique and Diana Policarpo, in conversations led by commissioners João Mourão and Luís Silva / Kunsthalle Lissabon, Paula Nascimento and Filipa Oliveira.

This program will also count on the collaboration of CML Councilor for Culture, Catarina Vaz Pinto, and Tobi Maier, director of Municipal Galleries of the Equipment Management and Cultural Animation Company (EGEAC), and will be completed with conversations about contemporary art publications, run by ArtsLibris.
