Architect João David Valério wins the Fernando Távora Award

Architect João David Valério was the winner of the 17th edition of the Fernando Távora Award with the proposal “Aldeias Modernistas. Edifícios de habitação de alta densidade/baixa altura na Suíça das décadas de 1950-80”.

The decision, taken unanimously, was revealed at a public ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ordem dos Arquitectos – Northern Regional Section (OASRN), on World Architecture Day, marked on 4 October.

João Valério graduated in Architecture from the University of Lisbon. He develops professional activity in a studio, in parallel with theoretical research on single-family housing and high-density/low-height collective housing systems. At the same time, he is a musician, performing regularly in solo concerts and in chamber groups and choirs.

The proposal “Aldeias Modernistas. Edifícios de habitação de alta densidade / baixa altura na Suíça das décadas de 1950-80” (“Modernist Villages. High-density/low-height housing buildings in Switzerland from the 1950s-80s”) earned the jury’s distinction for recognizing that this is an unprecedented work that contributes to the study of collective housing in low-density spaces, in which ” they combine qualities of a single-family house, such as green spaces and a character of individuality, with aspects of community and urban density”.

To carry out the proposal, João David Valério will receive a travel grant worth six thousand euros.

Launched in 2005, the Fernando Távora Award is organized by the Northern Regional Section of the Ordem dos Arquitectos (OASRN) in partnership with the Câmara de Matosinhos, the Casa da Arquitectura and the Fundação Instituto Arquiteto José Marques da Silva, with the sponsorship of Ageas Seguros in this 17th edition.

Remember that the architect Fernando Távora (1923-2005) was the main driving force behind the urban renewal of Barredo, an area located in the old center of Porto, close to the Ribeira.
