Artist carves Miguel Torga’s face in a tree

“Torga and its roots” is the name of the work that will mark this year the anniversary of the birth of one of the best known authors from Douro and Trás-os-Montes, Miguel Torga.

The artist Óscar Rodrigues sculpted, with a chainsaw, the face of Miguel Torga on the root of a tree, an initiative promoted by the Junta de São Martinho de Anta Sabrosa.

The root is approximately three tons. On one side, Torga’s face can be seen, where the author’s characteristic features, such as the long nose and thin lips, can be seen, and on the other side, the enormous branches that intertwine and fuse remain.

Óscar sculpts the wood using the technique of “wood carving“, and they are noticeable ‘scars’ that time left at the root.

After the sculpture is finished, the wood will be treated with a view to its preservation and protection. It will also be placed, with the help of a crane, in the place where it was originally.
