The famous five
The big winners of the Sardines 2024 Competition have already been chosen: four are Portuguese, one is foreign and the five were conceived/designed by women.
Five authors, aged between 17 and 42, won the 14th edition of the competition promoted by EGEAC. The sardines are all national creations (between Lisbon, Massamá, Montijo and Rio Tinto), except one, which comes from the Netherlands.
Carnations (to mark the 50th anniversary of April 25th), books (the basis of knowledge and imagination), olive oil (in a caricature of rising prices), cheese (a speciality for people all over the world and beyond ) and a varina (which sells fresh sardines) flesh out the sardines in the winning basket.
In this 14th edition, and like last year, the winning sardines were chosen through voting by EGEAC workers.
Each of the authors of the distinguished sardines will be awarded a prize worth €1500 (one thousand and five hundred euros).
This year, a total of 1823 authors competed, who presented 3582 proposals (2587 Portuguese and 995 foreign) from 63 countries.
In summer, in addition to being able to eat traditional sardines on a plate or on bread, we will also be able to see the famous five all over the city… and it doesn’t take long to find out where.
