Women in the 25 years of existence of Armazéns do Chiado

Project 'Arte Xxiado' from 1 July to September

Armazéns do Chiado once again brings art and culture to the heart of Lisbon. The ‘Arte Xxiado’ project is returning to the shopping centre, managed by Multi Portugal, with a painting exhibition that marks the 25 years of existence of Armazéns do Chiado.

The exhibition, open to the public from July 1, presents a personal view of the author about the reconstruction of the historic building after the fire in 1988, reporting the chronology of the transformation of the ruins into an invigorated shopping centre that became a reference in the city of Lisbon.

Entitled ‘RIBILD’, the exhibition presents nine works by the artist Lu Mourelle, that emphasize the revival of Armazéns do Chiado and highlight the crucial role that women played in this process. The artist proposes a fun and challenging insertion for the idealized characters and makes an analogy to the women who are representative of this journey, to the present, thinking of them as symbols of hope, resilience, welcome and transformation.

Lu Mourelle lives and works in Cascais and has made his works known on stages such as the Florence Biennale and solo exhibitions in Europe and the Americas. Before dedicating herself to full-time painting, the artist worked in the fashion world, a segment that until today influences the aesthetic standards of her work. Lu Mourelle has worked drawing and painting in mixed techniques since childhood. Later, the artist sought academic improvement in Europe, being today a member of the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon.

In addition to Portugal, Lu Mourelle’s works are present in public and private collections in Brazil, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, among other countries in Europe and Asia.

On floor 5 of Armazéns do Chiado, the exhibition ‘RIBILD’ is free and can be visited until September 1.

The project ‘Arte Xxiado’ is an area in Armazéns do Chiado that hosts monthly exhibitions of authors, guest artists and young talents from different artistic manifestations.

“This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Armazéns do Chiado. In resuming the “Arte Xxiado”, we wanted to mark this important milestone with a trip to the past, from the unavoidable event of the fire of 1988 to the turning point that happened in this area of the city, an area of excellence and reference at national and international level. Art has always been a very strong aspect of the shopping centre, and it remains today, so there would be no better way to revisit this history through a cultural experience”, says Ricardo Esteves, Director of Armazéns do Chiado.

“Over the coming months, we will be pleased to receive works of different names, linked to multiple art forms, and thus establish a meeting point between our visitors and culture,” he adds.
