Aveiro celebrates Technology in the last quarter of the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024
The Municipal Chamber of Aveiro presented various artistic proposals for the last three months of the year, which includes Aveiro Tech Week and the closing event of Aveiro as the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024.
The theme “Culture and Technology” underlies the various proposals to be presented in the fourth and final quarter of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture (Aveiro 2024). The programming for October, November, and December was revealed this Wednesday, September 11, at the 10th Infantry Regiment in São Jacinto (RI10), by the President of the Municipal Chamber of Aveiro, José Ribau Esteves, and the coordinator of Aveiro Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2024, José Pina.
The first reference from President CMA was regarding the choice of location for holding this Press Conference to present the programming of the last quarter of Aveiro Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2024. The choice of RI10 in São Jacinto refers to the place where everything began on June 15, 2019, with the public presentation of Aveiro’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2027, and the reiteration of the values of cultural and social development of the Municipality of Aveiro, in an inclusive approach encompassing the entire territory and all Citizens, caring for the values of identity, democracy, sustainability, and future development with more technology in everything.
Ribau Esteves thanked the partnership of RI10 and the presence of its Commander at the session, as well as the President of the Parish Council of São Jacinto, and especially the CMA employees who are part of the management team of the operation Aveiro Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2024 whom we invited to share this moment with us, also as a gesture of gratitude and a reaffirmation of trust for all the work done, which receives a very positive assessment.
“Technology is a fundamental element of the identity of Aveiro, its Companies, and its People. We are a place where science, technology, and art converge, calling to the present the spirit of our ancestors, who expressively brought us Art Nouveau or made the City and the Region a reference in the ceramic industry and new communication technologies, for example. In the last three months of the year, Aveiro will be a stage to think about the present and imagine the future, to take stock through the convergence of our voice and those of the many guests we will receive,” says José Ribau Esteves.
The activities dedicated to the realm of technology start with Aveiro Tech Week, taking place from September 30 to October 6. With cultural and technological initiatives, it is one of the main actions of its kind in Portugal. It includes TECHDAYS and PRISMA / Art Light Tech and features events that extend throughout the city, through artistic installations, exhibitions, technological solutions, talks, and gaming sessions, among other activities, with national and international personalities.
As has been happening throughout the year, the relationship with the quarterly theme (“Culture and Technology”) is reinforced through a series of initiatives in different artistic fields, created specifically for Aveiro Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2024. In the visual arts, the exhibition Mise en Abyme by the British artist Vicki Bennett (also known by her stage name People Like Us) is presented, which proposes immersion in a torrent of images where the protagonists liberate themselves from their narratives.
In the performing arts, there is a highlight for a debut proposal by choreographer and performer Yola Pinto and transdisciplinary pianist and artist Simão Costa, who present the performance My Body Is Not Just An Instance. In cinema, Joaquim Pavão will premiere his new short film Here, in Aveiro. In literature, there will be the project From Alexandria to the 21st Century: The Digital Library, which addresses how we read and relate to books in a technological world.
As for the programming in public space, attention focuses on the closing ceremony of Aveiro Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2024, with a large-scale intervention by the German theatre company Theater Titanick. A moment that takes place on December 29, preceded by a ceremonial session at the Teatro Aveirense, which includes an exclusive concert by pianist Marta Menezes, featuring an entirely Portuguese repertoire.
Among other actions that will address the theme of technology, there will be the unique installation Houses of the Wind, which will combine a composition by John Luther Adams with the scenographic work of Diogo Aguiar Studio, as well as the show Una Isla, by the award-winning theatre company Agrupación Señor Serrano. Also noteworthy is the conference Culture and Technology, featuring guests from various fields of knowledge.
The program of Aveiro Capital Portuguesa Cultura 2024 also includes a major exhibition by Paula Rego; the launch of the book Visual Atlas of Europe, a commission by the Municipal Chamber of Aveiro to Gonçalo M. Tavares; the biennial Everyone Is a Stage, featuring theatre from South America; the play Chorus of Lovers – which marked Tiago Rodrigues’ debut in playwriting; a new creation by choreographer and director Victor Hugo Pontes; the return of Jorge Cruz (founder of Diabo na Cruz) to the stage; and an operetta composed by Egas Moniz; among other highlights.
“We are in the final stage of the year and at the end of December this cycle will come to a close, which has brought so much to Aveiro and Portuguese Culture. It is merely a symbolic issue, as the commitment to culture will remain strategic in the management of the Municipal Chamber of Aveiro and its Partners. We will have a high point in our programming to make this transition and enter uniquely into 2025. You are already invited to enjoy New Year’s Eve in Aveiro and welcome the new year in an unmatched ambience,” concludes the President of the Chamber of Aveiro.
