B.Leza mythical house of African culture in Lisbon

B.Leza completes 29 years of history in December. To mark the date, the mythical house of African culture in Lisbon presents a strong poster throughout the month, with the next weekend promising nights at the top.

On the 20th, Klaudio Hoshai makes the Angola parade on the stage of B.Leza. The artist, who this year performed at AME in Cape Verde with excellent receptivity, and who after two months returned to the archipelago to perform in Mindelo at the São João festivities before 11,000 people, brings to B.Leza another night of his artistic residence “Invites” and makes a real Christmas Farra, inviting a handful of other Angolan artists: place to semba, kizomba and even kuduro!

On the 21st, B.Leza is preparing a big birthday party: it’s time to gather friends and blow out candles. The doors are open to all who wish to mark another year of this space of equality and multi-culturalality. And the B.Leza Band, along with some great musicians, prepares a repertoire to cheer up the night!

New Year’s Eve has on the agenda another big concert at B.Leza: the historic Banda Monte Cara invites Lucibela to a concert on the 31st. Cape Verdean authenticity and tradition in the powerful voice of this singer and the vibrant notes of the charismatic musical ensemble.

It is a powerful and high-quality month that promises to continue growing after the concerts already taken place: on 6, Dieg sold out the house with his original and impactful music rooted in the rhythms of Cape Verde; and on 13, the consecrated Karyna Gomes performed great songs from Guinea Bissau, before an eclectic audience.

Diversified programming towards 30

The year ends, but the program continues with large schedules already planned for 2025. On January 10, Karyna Gomes brings the second part of her concert, toasting the audience with more themes from the Guinean songbook, from the 60s to the 2000s, in a huge and rich repertoire for all ears and ages.

On January 11, Bitori nha Bibinha and Chando Graciosa take the stage and captivate for more and different rhythms of Cape Verde. True living legends of Funaná in the nights of B.Leza, in unique concerts that write the history of the culture of this house and this city.

But B.Leza. is not only from Africa but increasingly it is also a place where big names of Portuguese, Brazilian, Latin American and other latitudes pass by. A house that is affirmed by all and for all, because music and dance have no borders. A multi-cultural and multi-racial space, recognized by the Lisbon City Council as a “relevant cultural interest of the city of Lisbon”.

A little bit of history

In 1988, the Almada Carvalhais Palace hosted the “The Ball” project, conceived by a group of friends. It aimed to create a space of African music that would privilege the conviviality of different people. Later, in 1995, “The Ball” gave way to “B.Leza”, a project named after this major name of Cape Verdean culture, the poet and composer Francisco Xavier da Cruz.

Since always B.Leza has sought to disseminate and promote the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries, privileging music. Renowned artists such as Ala dos Namorados, Ildo Lobo, Tubarões, Tito Paris, Jorge Palma, Dino D’Santiago, Dany Silva, Bana, Carlos Zel, Lura, Sara Tavares, Nancy Vieira, Bau, Rodrigo Leão, Cool Hipnoise, Paulino Vieira, Paulo Flores, Bonga, B Fachada, Bruno Pernadas, Ana Lua Caiano, Zé Ibarra, Rodrigo Amarante, Ferro Gaita, Fogo Fogo, Bulimundo, África Negra, Toty Sa’med, Yuri da Cunha, Pongo and many others have already passed through there, making that stage a sanctuary of musical expression of our days.
