Seixal Bay hosts the Festival Saberes e Ofícios
which also includes a regatta of traditional boats on the 14th and 15th of June
The festival aims to recreate the crafts linked to nautical life, with demonstrations by axe carpenters, caulkers, blacksmiths, traditional paintings, sailmaking, seamanship, fishing gear and fishermen. There will also be a regatta of traditional boats, and the pier will be open to view the boats.
On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of June, Seixal Bay, more specifically Praia do Ti João, will host the Festival Saberes e Ofícios. This festival aims to recreate the maritime scene of old Seixal, with demonstrations of various activities linked to the river, namely the professions that were carried out in the construction of boats that sailed the Tagus. We will be able to see up close the work of axe carpenters, caulkers, blacksmiths, masters of traditional candles and paintings, seamanship and fishing arts, crafts that have shaped our collective history. Fishermen and fishermen will also be present, in a fitting tribute to those who have always lived from the river and with the river. The event will also include a regatta of traditional boats, and around 20 traditional boats from the Tagus River, such as catraios, canoes, varinos, dinghies and frigates, are expected to parade through the beautiful Seixal Bay on the afternoon of Saturday, June 14.
In the main hall of the Seixal Nautical Association (ANS), it is possible to visit the ship modelling exhibition, with several examples of traditional boats in scale. The Fishermen’s Tavern will also have food and drinks available for all visitors.
For the mayor, Paulo Silva, “this festival is of great importance for the municipality, which is deeply connected to the river and to naval arts and crafts, which have unfortunately been lost from generation to generation due to a lack of people who want to learn and continue these arts.”
This initiative is organised by the Seixal Nautical Association, with the support of the Seixal Municipal Council and the Union of Parishes of Seixal, Arrentela and Aldeia de Paio Pires.
