Monte Cara once again dresses B.Leza with the sounds, memories, and soul of a time gone by.
On September 19, the legendary Lisbon venue hosts another Noite Monte Cara, a celebration of Cape Verdean music in all its vitality and legacy.
On stage will be Banda Monte Cara, a group created by Alcides Nascimento, composed of musicians who have influenced generations at the legendary Monte Cara in Lisbon, and new talents from the contemporary African music scene.
This special edition will feature the captivating voice of Mário Marta, a Cape Verdean-Guinean singer who has established himself as one of the most exciting voices of the new generation of Cape Verdean music. With a career spanning gospel, traditional music, and collaborations with artists such as Lura, Tito Paris, Sara Tavares, and Nancy Vieira, Marta brings to the B.Leza stage the vocal elegance and emotional charge needed to flesh out the songs that defined Monte Cara.
Banda Monte Cara is more than a musical project; it’s a gesture of living memory. The repertoire delves into the sounds that defined the Monte Cara club between 1976 and 1991, with compositions by artists such as Dionísio Maio, Paulino Vieira, Manuel d’Novas, and Pedro Rodrigues. It’s a sonic journey through semba, funaná, morna, and coladeira, in a rhythm that crosses the Atlantic and stirs the hearts of the diaspora.
This series of shows, which began in 2021, recaptures the spirit of the legendary Monte Cara Club. Founded in 1976 by Bana (Adriano Gonçalves), on Rua do Sol ao Rato, it was more than a music venue: it was a cultural epicentre, a place of encounters, freedom, and creativity. Notable names such as Armando Tito, Celina Pereira, Fantcha, and Paulino Vieira performed there, and their echoes are still heard throughout Lisbon’s nightlife.
Noites Monte Cara at B.Leza have continued this legacy with excellent music, contagious joy, and a deep connection with the audience. This new edition promises, once again, to transform B.Leza into a meeting point for times, geographies, and affections.
