Bands from all over the country parade in Lisbon

It is already a tradition in Lisbon, that on the 1st of December: Avenida da Liberdade receives the National Parade of Philharmonic Bands, integrated into the celebrations of the day when the Restoration of Independence in Portugal is celebrated.

In this 11th edition 32 bands, from various parts of the country and composed of musicians of different generations, with a total of more than 1500 participants.

The Grupo de Bombos de Atei, from Mondim de Basto, opens the XI National Parade of Philharmonic Bands, starting at 3 pm. Founded more than two decades ago, the group is made up of players who maintain the tradition of the old Zés Pereiras, an artistic and cultural model of traditional Portuguese percussion from Trás-os-Montes.

At the end of the parade, as usual, the bands concentrate in the Praça dos Restauradores for a joint performance, this year under the direction of Maestro Délio Gonçalves, holder of the Portuguese Armada Band. An interpretation of the Maria da Fonte Hymn, the Restoration Hymn and the National Anthem A Portuguesa that has the special participation of soloist Alessandra Samuel and the Army Choir.

Lisbon is thus once again receiving this initiative that aims to honour and disseminate a centennial musical practice fundamental for the musical and professional formation of young people from all over the country.

The Parade of Philharmonic Bands is an initiative organized by the 1st December Movement, Historical Society of Independence of Portugal, Lisbon City Hall and EGEAC.
