Philharmonic bands parade on Avenida

DECEMBER 1, THURSDAY, 3 pm, AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE

Next week, Avenida da Liberdade will once again be the stage for the National Philharmonic Band Parade as part of the December 1st celebrations – the day that marks the Restoration of Independence in Portugal.

This year there are 26 participating bands, involving musicians from different generations of bands and groupings from different parts of the country.

Orquestra de Percussão de Mafra – Academia do Bombo and the Banda Sinfónica da Guarda Nacional Republicana open this IX National Philharmonic Band Parade which will start, as usual, next to the Statue of the Great War Fighters, at 3 pm.

Banda Musical e Artística da Charneca is invited this year to represent Lisbon, the host city of this initiative that aims to honour and promote a musical practice that is over 200 years old and that, all over the country, continues to play an important role in the civic and musical education of children and young people.

The parade ends at Praça dos Restauradores with a performance by the Orquestra de Percussão de Mafra – Academia do Bombo and a joint interpretation of the Anthem of Maria da Fonte, the Anthem of Restoration and also the full version of the National Anthem A Portuguesa, under the direction of Maestro João Afonso Cerqueira, from the Banda da Guarda Nacional Republicana.

This is an initiative organized by the 1st of December Movement, SHIP – Historical Society of Independence of Portugal, Lisbon City Council and EGEAC.
