The “Belcanto” restaurant of the chef José Avillez, once again on the list of the best 50 restaurants in the world in the list “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants“, was announced on social networks.
The “Belcanto” Restaurant is the only restaurant in Portugal to appear in the list in 42nd place, where “A casa do Porco” in São Paulo, Brazil is also in 17th position.
The winner is “Noma” restaurant, followed by “Geranium” both in Copenhagen, Denmark, in third place is “Asador Etxebarri” in Atxondo, Spain.
Spain and the United States of America are even the most represented countries on the list with six restaurants each, followed by Italy with four, and Denmark with only two occupies the first two places.
The “Belcanto” restaurant opened in 1958, in Chiado, in the beautiful Largo de São Carlos, next to the National Theater of São Carlos and the house where Fernando Pessoa was born. The absolutely privileged location in the historic centre of Lisbon, the sober atmosphere, the discreet service and its cuisine, quickly won over Lisbon’s elites who made Belcanto a mandatory meeting point.
“Belcanto” by José Avillez opened in early 2012, fully renovated. That same year, he was awarded a Michelin star and, in 2014, a second. “Belcanto” was the first restaurant in Lisbon to be awarded two Michelin stars and José Avillez was the first Portuguese chef to receive this distinction in Portugal.
In the words of José Avilez “Cooking, serving, feeding. Take care of who sits at our table. The ingredients, technique, delivery and passion of each cook and each host.
The search for the perfect balance between creativity, the new, the unique and unknown with the classic, the ingredient, the raw material in its most natural state, as it arrives at our door with minimal intervention.”
