Benfica beats Lyon and claims first win in the Champions

The Portuguese team has returned to winning the Champions League. In this edition, Benfica scored their first Champions League triumph on Matchday 3 and left the chances of qualifying open for the remaining three games in the group stage.

Benfica’s first win in the 2019/20 edition of the Champions League came on Wednesday. In front of Lyon, the incarnated team had to sweat (and enough) to get the three points to stay in the light. Rafa scored first, after four minutes, Memphis Depay equalized at 70 ‘and, just four minutes from time, Pizzi stamped the Benfica triumph after a ‘helping hand’ from Anthony Lopes.

A win that leaves Benfica with renewed hopes for their three remaining Group G games. It was urgent to win, and that was what the Eagles did. Still, Bruno Lage’s side failed to leave the bottom of the group with three points behind Lyon (4 points), Zenit (4 points) and Leipzig (6 points).

After a first half, where Benfica was superior and had more opportunities, in the second half the dominance belonged to Lyon. After the French goal, there was even some misunderstanding of the incarnated team that, however, never gave up, something that the final result also reflects. A victory achieved more by effort than by the beauty of the exhibition.
