Benfica draws with Leipzig and says goodbye to the Champions

Benfica shattered their hopes in the Champions League and let exactly 9.5 million euros fly – a figure that corresponds to the eighth finals. The eagles went to Germany to draw against Leipzig (2-2) and confirmed goodbye to the 2019/20 edition of the millionaire race. It remains to play the 6th and final round of the competition to try to secure a place in the Europa League.

Bruno Lage’s side even showed a very good finishing streak – two goals in 4 shots – but threw everything to lose in the last few minutes. After winning 2-0 with goals from Pizzi and Carlos Vinícius, the Portuguese side were level.

First, Rúben Dias commits a penalty on 89 minutes and Forsberg did not miss the opportunity. Then the team lost control of itself and left the same Forsberg alone in the penalty area. Werner crossed and the Swedish striker made the most of the incarnate’s defensive inattention to draw.

Final minutes of terror for Benfica who were very close to securing what they had never done in their history: winning on German soil in the Champions League. It didn’t win and it turned out to be Leipzig doing something unheard of. Nagelsmann’s team qualified for the first time in the club’s history for the Champions League round of 16.
