Benfica eliminated from Europa League by Arsenal (3-2)
This Thursday, Benfica was eliminated by Arsenal and failed to access the round of 16 of the Europa League. After a 1-1 draw in Rome, the Eagles lost 2-3 in the second leg in Athens.
At Georgios Karaiskakis, the eagles even lost, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal at 21′.
At 43’, sublime direct free-kick from Diogo Gonçalves left everything tied, and at 61’ Rafa took advantage of an offer from Dani Ceballos to, after bypassing Bernd Leno, shoot into the deserted goal. Shortly after, on 67′, a strong shot by Scotsman Kieran Tierney put the tie back on and Benfica was resisting, but on 88′, Aubameyang again escaped the last line of the eagles to head the turn and give the clearance to Arsenal.
Like last season, then with Bruno Lage being eliminated by Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica says goodbye to the Europa League in the 16th round.
