Benfica is in the ‘quarters’ of the Champions League

Champions League

Benfica went to Amsterdam and won the second leg, against Ajax, and thus stamped their passport to the next stage, the Champions League.

Benfica, which has had a performance to forget at the national level, continues to surprise Europe, in a game dominated by Ajax, Darwin Núñez’s goal, close to the final whistle, earned the victory and the passage to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Benfica defeated Ajax, at Johann Cruyff Arena, by 1-0, after having drawn 2-2 in the first leg at Estádio da Luz, the favourite home team, and they started the attack on the Portuguese team’s nets, but not always the best way.

In a one-way game during the first half, the lack of creativity at the time of scoring allowed Benfica to hope, as cross after cross, play after play, the danger passed.

Sébastien Haller even put the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out, due to Dusan Tadic’s irregular position at the beginning of the move, real opportunities were scarce, and Benfica, playing on the counterattack, was trying to reach Ajax’s goal, especially by Darwin Nunez.

The second was more of the same, Ajax attacking, Benfica defending as best he could, but those who don’t score sometimes lose, in the 77th minute, Darwin Núñez, headed in after a free-kick by Grimaldo.

Ajax still tried to react, but Benfica ended up winning and is now among the eight best teams in Europe, alongside Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal and Chelsea.
