Benjamin Clementine, winner of the Mercury Prize, brings his latest album, And I Have Been, under his belt. This work of his explores the rich tapestry of life, touching on themes such as love, loss, marriage, children and depression, while reflecting on the change in self-awareness over time. The album was written, performed and produced by Clementine, who described the process as a balance between impeccable exceptions and the need for human imperfections.
Benjamin says: “And I Have Been was conceived during Covid. Like everyone, I too have been faced with many lessons, complications and epiphanies related to sharing my path with someone special. ‘Part One’ is just preparing the beginning, it’s the tip of the iceberg that sets the stage for ‘Part Two,’ which explores further.”
And I Have Been demonstrates Clementine’s experimental and avant-garde approach, combining style, elegance and poetry. The musician, who also made his acting debut in the film ‘Dune‘, seeks perfection in a delicate balance between his influences and the human touch, providing listeners with a unique and reflective musical experience.
The album was released alongside its lead single ‘Genesis‘. The higher register of Benjamin’s voice explores nuances of cultural identity, while a drunken rhythm, with a sense of pleasure, complements lyrics that talk about traveling nomadicly with no destination in mind.
He adds: “‘Genesis’ is a song about constantly denying my roots. But as always, no matter what we do in the new world, our old world is buried in our subconscious. I found myself in a love-hate relationship with like my roots. I’m trapped in freedom.”
The first day of NOS Alive’24 is marked with the English artist’s concert on the Heineken Stage.
