Bienal Fotografia do Porto launches 6 artistic creation grants

Photography reflects on sustainability projects in Portugal

The Sustentar project is a clear example of how photography can be at the service of a given territory.

Until February 23, national and foreign artists residing in Portugal who uses photography and video as a means of expression can apply. 6 scholarships, 6 projects, 6 territories, 6 exhibitions to “Sustentar” projects already implemented or under implementation in various parts of the country.

Social and/or environmental sustainability is the common denominator of this program organized and produced by Ci.CLO Plataforma de Fotografia, which, remember, promoted the 1st Bienal Fotografia do Porto.

A self-sustainable and environmentally friendly city; the preservation of the memory of the extraction of salt and the surrounding ecosystems; a 350 million-year-old history; extreme drought and climate change and the Fishermen’s quarters in Setúbal are some of the themes that this program wants to bring to the debate.

And in what way? Through photography and video. “The Sustentar artistic creation program aims to produce a series of projects on initiatives that have already been or are being implemented in the national territory in response to the ecological and social challenges we face”, observes Virgílio Ferreira, artistic director of Ci.CLO and of the Bienal Fotografia do Porto and program coordinator

Sustentar.
Ci.CLO, in partnership with the Municipalities of Évora, Figueira da Foz, Loulé, Mértola, Setúbal and EDIA, opened a call for the award of six artistic creation grants that include support for the development of new projects with the production of a travelling exhibition, which will be integrated into the programming of the Bienal’21 Fotografia do Porto and in the various exhibition spaces of the partners involved.

The selected artists will integrate a creative program organized by Ci.CLO with curatorial follow-up by Virgílio Ferreira; Pablo Berástegui, curator and director of the Salut au Monde Photography Gallery and Krzysztof Candrowicz, curator, art director, researcher and educator, former artistic director of Triennale der Photographie Hamburg and two workshops led by Jayne Dyer, Gil Penha-Lopes and Álvaro Domingues.
