BIRD – An intense story about growing up in the gaps of the world
From British director Andrea Arnold < Opening today, May 8th in theaters
Barry Keoghan stars in BIRD, the latest drama from acclaimed British director Andrea Arnold, winner of the 2005 Oscar for Best Short Film and author of American Honey, which won the Jury Prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
The story follows Bailey, a 12-year-old girl growing up in a marginalised community in southern England, where childhood ends too soon and affection doesn’t always arrive on time. The film hits theatres on May 8.
BIRD gives a voice to those who grow up far from the centre, in a world marked by absence, the search for belonging and a silent desire to be seen. Bailey lives with his father (Barry Keoghan – nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2023, for The Spirits of Inisherin) and his brother, in a marginalised neighbourhood in North Kent, on the fringes of the city and its promises. She grows up surrounded by absence — of affection, of direction, of the future. But it is also in this space that he begins to search for his voice. As she approaches adolescence, Bailey (Nykiya Adams) ventures beyond what she knows, searching for attention, belonging and meaning.
Andrea Arnold’s cinematic work is a profound reflection on the notions of identity and belonging. A visceral and poetic portrait of adolescence in peripheral environments, filmed with the authenticity that distinguishes it.
BIRD stood out at the 77th Cannes International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. The film was nominated for the BAFTA Awards (2025), participated in the British Independent Film Awards (2024) and the European Film Awards. It will now hit cinemas on May 8th, with distribution assured by NOS Audiovisuais.
