Bistro 99 by Chakall

Arriving at Bistro 99 by Chakall is, for the Portuguese-Argentine Chef, almost like returning home, for several reasons.

There was always a desire to have a space that could bring together Argentina, Portugal and Spain, evoking the chef’s Galician roots, as his father was from Galicia, in the neighbouring country. A space that brings together the concepts of Tapas & Petiscos, so characteristic of the 2 countries on the Iberian Peninsula. It is therefore no surprise that here you can find the famous Argentine Empanadas, Pulpo à Galega, the famous Morcilla de Burgos or Peixinhos da Horta.

The return “home” is also due to the location where Chef Chakall returns after many years, to an area of the city that mixes gastronomy and art, which merges with the hurried movement of those walking downtown and the contemplation of those who stroll and discover the Portuguese capital. The hustle and bustle of those who arrive to watch a show at the Coliseu, right in front, or the amazement of those who get “lost” in the streets and alleys of Lisbon.

The atmosphere at Bistro 99 by Chakall is intended to be relaxed and light in the image of the chef himself, but at the same time cosmopolitan, creative and close, right in the centre where everything happens. It is, in essence, an invitation to good mood, sharing, and good times in an increasingly captivating city where pleasure at the table remains intact and increasingly mixed, just like the city that increasingly assumes its multicultural facet, cosmopolitan and open to the world.

Chef Chakall

Chakall is a globetrotter, a true citizen of the world. A chef and extremely passionate about everything he does, in the kitchen and outside of it. Maybe not exactly in that order, but without a doubt he is a man who loves travelling to distant places and discovering new flavours and cultures. Someone passionate about cuisine and the countries he visits. His passions also include music and photography.

His ‘trademark’ is his colourful turban, instead of the traditional chef’s hat. His strong Argentine accent, his talent for cooking and his sharp sense of humour are characteristics that make him unique and distinguish him in national and international cuisine, where he is widely recognized and constantly in high demand.

Chakall was born in Tigre, Buenos Aires, on June 5, 1972, a “product of five different cultures” (as far as he knows!): Galician, Swiss-German, French Basque, Italian and is, of course, of Argentine descent. His experience in countless exotic locations, determination to succeed and tangible energy all influence his attitude towards life, his relationships and his cooking style.

These attributes of his personality along with his creativity, originality and charisma are recognized and appreciated by audiences around the world.
From a young age, she had direct contact with the kitchen at her mother’s restaurant. From identifying ingredients to helping in the kitchen and cooking at a young age, he revealed countless secrets.

But as a teenager, he decided that restaurants and cooking weren’t a job for him, so he decided to study journalism. He graduated and worked as a journalist for 7 years. With a restless personality, he decided that journalism was not a job for life either, so he decided to give up everything and travel.
First a solo motorcycle trip through Latin America and then a temporary stop for a few months in Portugal. This was the first connection to the country and has lasted for more than 20 years. But Portugal was “just” a way of preparing his trip to Africa: a trip that took him to dozens of African countries for almost 2 years before returning to national territory.

In Portugal, in addition to being a regular on television programs that made him known to the general public, he manages Cozinha Divina, a catering, events and consultancy company, and is responsible for several spaces: Farina by Chakall, L’Origine by Chakall and Luz by Chakall, in Lisbon; Areal Beach Bar by Chakall and West 23 by Chakall, located in Lourinhã; and, Zapata by Chakall, in Porto. He is also the creator of Chakburger, a burger concept he created in São João do Estoril; and La Susy by Chakall, in Vila Nova de Gaia, a concept that pays homage to his mother, also a cook, but above all his greatest inspiration in life. In addition to also taking over, as a consultant chef, the destinations of Fuel by Chakall, a restaurant at the Hotel Pr1me Energize in Monte Gordo, in the Algarve and Bistro 99 by Chakall, in Portas de Santo Antão, in the heart of Lisbon.

The Portuguese easily recognize him, as he has always respected, appreciated and promoted Portuguese products, cuisine and the country itself. He is a powerful brand among his peers, being one of the “Portuguese” chefs with the most notoriety, and followers on social media, attracting attention wherever he goes.

Author of numerous books, published in Portugal and several countries and translated into several languages. An attentive citizen, it is also common to see him embrace various initiatives of a social nature. As he is such a charismatic person, it is no surprise to see that he has had television programs in Spain, Germany, China and the Dominican Republic; he published books in several languages and countries, he had restaurants in several countries such as Germany or India, just to name a few.

One of the biggest challenges from October 2021 to March 2022, however, was representing Portugal at Expo 2020 Dubai, as it was responsible for the Portuguese Pavilion Restaurant at the world exhibition that took place in the United Arab Emirates. A successful project that ended up as a reference restaurant and in first place among more than 190 restaurants present in the competition.
